Courtyard

Checkout the beautiful space on the left. It was featured in Atlanta Homes Magazine.

We will have a semi enclosed courtyard! I debated the courtyard idea for awhile. As a little girl, I always thought it was "so cool" to be able to be in one part of the house, look outside a window, and across the

way, see another part of the house. It's something about exploring a new space while getting a sneak peak of other parts of the home without being able to immediately access it. Added anticipation, mystery build up, exciting stuff, isn't it? /s

Our home has a ton of doors, maybe an overly excessive amount, but that's one of the things I loved when visiting the French Quarters. Doors should ideally lead you to a space you use and hopefully all the doors have a purpose and aren't just for aesthetics. I can't say all of ours do, but with a courtyard, it's easy to have all the doors lead to a single central outdoor space.

How cool is it to stand from your bedroom balcony and have a view of the pool? How cool is it to be able to access the pool from any room? How UN-cool is it to worry about your kids or their friends jumping off the balcony into the pool? No need to worry for now, that's a problem future Ashley can thank current Ashley for.

Having a courtyard requires at least a U-shaped home. If you are concerned about the house looking large or wide from the street, a U-shaped home would take away from the front elevation. It wasn't really anything we were worried about. The challenging part for us, was having a house large enough to build a U-shape. From the original plans, we had to extend the width of the courtyard to fit a pool, something we went back and forth on for awhile. Ideally, we would have loved to have a larger pool, as well as be able to fit lounge beds on all sides of the pool. However, we really did not want a larger indoor space. Along the same lines, we didn't want to extend the length of the home of accommodate the full length of the pool either. So our home is maybe more like a lowercase u, where the pool will extend beyond the courtyard. In any case, I think we landed on good compromise which gives us a decent size pool with enough walking distance between the pool and home.
