Here we are... four months into construction and quite a bit of progress has been made. (This porta potty is not passing the vibe check.)
We are at the tail end of the framing stage. The frame has been constructed, and the structural sheathing and moisture barrier have been installed. Our windows are FINALLY out of storage and living their best lives. Knowing there was a long lead time on doors and windows, we ordered them at the end of 2020. We then ran into a number of issues which delayed construction. The doors and windows eventually arrived in early 2021 and have been patiently waiting in storage for their time to shine.
We went with Windsor Windows & Doors, specifically their Pinnacle Clad line in Matte Black. Honestly, it was overwhelming with all the options out there, and who actually pays attention to windows if you are not building a home? After watching a lot of youtube videos and reading more about the different types of doors and windows, I began to build a requirements list. Here's what it came down to:
Looks. What can I say, I am pretty shallow. I wanted something clean and simple.
Strength, Durability and Longevity. See? I'm practical, having a long lasting relationship obviously matters. With the Houston humidity and hot, hot summers, I wanted something that could withstand the weather elements and would not rot or warp over time.
Security.
Energy Efficient.
Windows can be casement, single-hung or double-hung. Casement windows look more streamlined and are very simple in appearance. They also provide the most security because they can only be opened with a crank movement which is only accessible from the inside.
Windows can be made of several materials. There are wood, vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum clad to name a few.
At the time, while trying to make a decision, we were in the middle of covid. Showrooms were closed. From my "research" (aka youtube videos), I was heavily leaning towards Windsor Pinnacle Clad but had lots of doubts and didn't want to make such a big purchase without being able to see, touch and use these windows!
Then I ran across an article from Brooke and Henry of Plank & Pillow about their window selections and decision making process for their new home. They have been re-modeling homes and in construction for some time. My thought was I don't really need to do any more research, if it's good enough for them, it's damn well good enough for me!
Studio McGee also shared the details of their exterior selections. Lo and behold, it was also Windsor Pinnacle Clad. That was my sign (yes, I look for signs). Sign me up! Take my money! Get those windows, sight unseen! In my mind, Brooke & Henry and Shea & Syd can do no wrong.
We landed on a window with a black exterior and white interior. I really liked the modern feel of black, but at the same time white is also so classic and timeless. Since I couldn't make a decision, we decided to do both.
Brooke & Henry's blog post share great ideas on how to cut back in costs. In addition to their suggestions, you can also opt for swapping out some windows to stationary windows, which are windows that just don't open. We did quite a few of those in our home.
